Innisfail carries the oldest housing stock of the towns within half an hour of Red Deer: 44.2% of its 3,352 occupied dwellings predate 1980, roughly 1,482 homes. Its immediate neighbours on the QEII — Penhold at 26.4% and Blackfalds at 10.2% — are a different generation of town entirely, despite being minutes away.
That matters because proximity is usually treated as similarity. On the axis that actually governs insulation work, Innisfail has more in common with Ponoka or Camrose than with the commuter towns it sits between.
What the buildings in Innisfail are actually like.
The housing stock in Innisfail
Set the 44.2% pre-1980 share against 61.8% single-detached — the second figure is low for a town this size, meaning Innisfail carries a substantial share of duplex, row and apartment stock.
Old and partly attached is the combination that hides heat loss best. In a pre-1980 detached house the failures are at least all inside one building: attic bypasses, an unsealed hatch, a rim joist that is loose batt or nothing. In an older attached building the same failures run past a party wall, so warm air lost from one unit's top plate surfaces in another unit's ceiling, and no single owner sees the whole picture. About 1,482 dwellings here fall on the older side of that line.
What winter does here
Innisfail has no climate station of its own. Its figures come from RED DEER REGIONAL A (climate ID 3025480) about 30 km north: 5,619 heating degree days at an 18 °C base, an average January daily minimum of -17.6 °C, and -43.8 °C at the extreme. At that distance the borrowed reading is a reasonable regional stand-in, but it is still a Red Deer measurement carrying an Innisfail label.
What else is built in Innisfail
Innisfail is the one community in this ledger with an insulation plant in it. Johns Manville Canada Inc. runs an insulation and commercial-roofing manufacturing facility in town (investinnisfail.ca).
Alongside it, Deep Sky Alpha — described by its developer as the world's first cross-technology carbon-removal centre, a $50M investment — completed construction on 26 June 2025 on a five-acre site in a municipality-owned industrial park at 6015 35 Street. A $200M waste-to-energy plant and a $4M municipal solar farm are planned nearby (Deep Sky Climate press release, 2025). Purpose-built process facilities like these are envelope-critical from day one: the interior conditions they hold are set by the process, not by comfort.
