Rocky Mountain House sits almost exactly at the midpoint of this ledger's housing-age range: 44.6% of 2,693 occupied dwellings — about 1,201 homes — were built before 1980, against a spread that runs from 9.4% to 68.2% across the 27 communities.
A near-even split is the hardest kind of town to generalise about. Half the buildings here were detailed before continuous air barriers were normal practice and half were not, and the difference is not visible from the curb.
What the buildings in Rocky Mountain House are actually like.
The housing stock in Rocky Mountain House
60.4% single-detached is low for a town of 6,765 — only Sundre, Red Deer and Wetaskiwin sit lower in this set — so a substantial share of the stock is attached or multi-unit. The census also records 3,075 total private dwellings against 2,693 occupied by usual residents.
An oil-and-gas service town carries a housing pattern that follows the sector: rental and multi-unit stock built to house a workforce, alongside owner-occupied houses. In older multi-unit buildings the recurring problem is not the amount of insulation but the number of separate air paths — party-wall cavities, shared attic space, common mechanical chases — each of which lets warm air from one suite reach a cold surface somewhere else in the building.
What winter does here
Rocky Mountain House is assigned RED DEER REGIONAL A (climate ID 3025480), about 84 km east: 5,619 heating degree days at an 18 °C base, an average January daily minimum of -17.6 °C, -43.8 °C at the extreme. The town has no station of its own, and it sits notably farther into the foothills than the station does.
Its own published climate table lists a January mean minimum of -17.2 °C — town's own published Wikipedia/Environment Canada climate table; period not confirmed as the standard 1991–2020 normal. It is carried as colour, not as a correction to the borrowed figure, because the two are not measured over the same period.
Acreage and lake property
Crimson Lake Provincial Park lies roughly 18 km northwest of town. Recreational property in that band tends to be seasonally or intermittently heated, which shifts the priority from insulation depth toward an unbroken air and vapour seal at rim joists, crawl spaces and roof-wall junctions.

The Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site preserves fur-trade post ruins from 1799–1876 and was a launch point for David Thompson's expeditions. The town holds a twin-town relationship with Kamikawa, Hokkaido, and was struck by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake on 20 October 2021 — the second-strongest ever recorded in Alberta. Its economic base runs to petroleum, agriculture and forestry. The drive from Red Deer is 83.69 km on Highway 11 west, about 1h09.
