Nordegg, AB

Nordegg is a hamlet in the foothills of the Rockies, 171.1 km west of Red Deer on the David Thompson Highway, and it is a different climate from the prairie towns most of this service area covers. Its own weather station sits at 1,332 m and records 5,868 heating degree days a year — about 249 more than Red Deer — even though its average January night is milder.

The reason is summer. The Nordegg station logs 144.0 heating degree days in July alone, against 72.5 at Red Deer, and no month of the year comes in at zero. A building here is asking for heat in every season, which makes the envelope a year-round question rather than a winter one.

What winter does here

Nordegg is one of four communities in this data set that reads its own climate station rather than borrowing one. NORDEGG CS (climate ID 3054843) is about 2.6 km from the hamlet. On the 1991–2020 normals it records 5,868 heating degree days at an 18 °C base, a January daily minimum averaging -15.2 °C — against -17.6 °C at Red Deer — and -45 °C at the recorded extreme.

Milder average nights, a deeper extreme and cool summers matter for insulation in two ways. The annual load is high because the heating season barely ends; and the cold snaps, when they come, are severe. Both argue for air sealing first: a leaky building pays for its leaks in every month of the year here, not just in January.

Local context

Where Nordegg sits

Nordegg was founded in 1914 as one of Alberta's first planned communities, a coal town for Brazeau Collieries, and it lost most of its people when the mine closed for good in 1955. It sits in the North Saskatchewan River valley just east of where the David Thompson Highway meets the Highway 734 spur of the Forestry Trunk Road, about 2h15 from Red Deer via Highway 11 west (the David Thompson Highway) on an OSRM routing estimate.

This page carries no population, housing-age or income figures. Nordegg is a hamlet within Clearwater County, not a census subdivision, and the census profile that covers hamlets could not be retrieved for this data set. Clearwater County's numbers describe a whole county, not this hamlet, so they are not used in its place.
