Gull Lake, AB

Gull Lake is a summer village on the southern shore of the lake, and the census shows exactly what that means. Of its 243 private dwellings in 2021, only 95 were occupied by usual residents. The other 148 were nobody's usual residence, which in a summer village mostly means cottages and part-year places — buildings heated when people are there and left cold when they are not.

That changes what insulation is for. In a house lived in all winter, the job is to cut the heating bill. In a building that sits cold for weeks and then gets heated up for a weekend, the job is to control air and moisture so the structure survives the cycling.

What the buildings in Gull Lake are actually like.

The housing stock in Gull Lake

The full-time population is growing — 176 people in 2016, 226 in 2021, a change of 28.4% — and dwellings occupied by usual residents went from 79 to 95. Whenever a cottage does become somebody's year-round home, that is precisely the point where an envelope built for summer use stops being good enough.

A three-season cottage converted to full-time living usually needs the same things in the same order: an air-sealed ceiling before more depth goes into the attic, a floor or crawl space that is no longer open to the wind, and walls that were never meant to hold a 21 °C interior against a January night.

This page does not quote a pre-1980 share or a single-detached share for Gull Lake. The census sample here is about 100 households, and StatCan's rounding leaves those percentages too coarse to mean anything. They are omitted rather than published as if they were measurements.

What winter does here

There is no climate station at Gull Lake. The village is assigned RED DEER REGIONAL A (climate ID 3025480), about 31 km south: 5,619 heating degree days at an 18 °C base, a January daily minimum averaging -17.6 °C, and -43.8 °C at the recorded extreme. For a part-year building the extreme is the number that matters — it is what an unheated cottage sits through in January.

Local context

Where Gull Lake sits

The summer village sits on the southern shore of Gull Lake, about 24 km southeast of Rimbey, and is 34.9 km from Red Deer by road via QEII Highway 2 and local roads (Aspelund Road, Woodynook Road) — about 32 min on an OSRM routing estimate.

"Gull Lake" names two things in this part of Alberta: the lake, whose shoreline also runs past Bentley and Rimbey, and this municipality on it. It is also the name of a town in Saskatchewan. The figures on this page are the Alberta summer village's own census record, not the lake's and not Saskatchewan's.
