Drayton Valley is an oil town that was built in a hurry and then kept. Before the 1953 oil boom the area was farms and logging; by 1957 it was a town. 45.5% of its 2,897 occupied dwellings were built before 1980 — about 1,318 homes, most of them from the boom decades rather than from the homestead era.
That timing matters for insulation. Housing put up fast in the 1950s, '60s and '70s was framed to the standards of the day: thin attic batts, uninsulated or lightly insulated rim joists, and basements finished long after the fact. Those are the places a retrofit in Drayton Valley usually starts.
What the buildings in Drayton Valley are actually like.
The housing stock in Drayton Valley
62.9% of Drayton Valley's dwellings are single-detached, so a bit over a third of the stock shares a wall, a floor or a roof with a neighbour. Set beside a 45.5% pre-1980 share, that gives two distinct retrofit conversations in one town: the detached house, where one owner controls the whole envelope, and the older attached or multi-unit building, where the air barrier has to be continuous between suites before added insulation pays off.
The town's population barely moved between the last two censuses — 7,235 in 2016, 7,291 in 2021, a change of 0.8% — so the older stock is not being diluted by new subdivisions. The 1,318 pre-1980 homes are a standing share of the town, not a shrinking one.
What winter does here
Drayton Valley has no climate station with a published 1991–2020 normal. The nearest one that has one is BRETON (climate ID 3010815), about 34 km east: 5,213 heating degree days at an 18 °C base, a January daily minimum averaging -15.2 °C, and -40.5 °C at the recorded extreme.
That is about 407 degree days lighter than the 5,619 recorded at RED DEER REGIONAL A, the figure most towns around Red Deer borrow. It is a real difference in the regional heating load, but it is a borrowed figure from a station 34 km away, not a Drayton Valley measurement — and a lighter heating load still leaves a long Alberta winter to insulate for.

Drayton Valley sits on Highway 22 — the Cowboy Trail — between the North Saskatchewan and Pembina rivers, 170.2 km from Red Deer by road via Highways 11A, 20, 39 and 22, about 2h15 on an OSRM routing estimate. A ferry carried traffic across the North Saskatchewan from 1955 until a bridge replaced it; that bridge was itself replaced in 2014.
The town is also a participating municipality in Alberta's Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP). CEIP is financing repaid through the property tax bill, not a rebate, and insulation is eligible work under the residential program. Drayton Valley was on the ABmunis residential program-locations list when it was checked on 5 October 2026; intake windows open and close as budgets fill.
