Consort, AB

Consort is a village of 644 in Special Area No. 4, out past Coronation toward the Saskatchewan border, and its housing is mostly older than the 1980 code: 56.6% of 262 occupied dwellings, about 148 homes.

The census also shows a village getting smaller. Consort counted 729 people in 2016 and 644 in 2021, a change of -11.7%. Fewer people does not mean fewer buildings to heat: the 2021 count still found 300 private dwellings in the village, 262 of them occupied by usual residents.

What the buildings in Consort are actually like.

The housing stock in Consort

75.5% of Consort's dwellings are single-detached. Old, detached and spread out is a housing stock where every building is its own envelope problem: the attic plane, the rim joist and the basement walls of each house, plus whatever shop or outbuilding sits beside it.

Farming, ranching and oil production are the village's main industries, and that shapes the non-residential buildings around it. Quonsets and other steel buildings are a different insulation job from a house: often there is no framed cavity at all, and the insulation goes directly onto the inside of the steel.

What winter does here

Consort has no climate station of its own. Its figures are borrowed from CORONATION CLIMATE (climate ID 3011887), about 47 km west: 5,887 heating degree days at an 18 °C base, a January daily minimum averaging -18.8 °C, and -43.8 °C at the recorded extreme. Stettler and Hanna borrow the same station, so all three pages show identical climate numbers — that is a shared station, not a coincidence.

Closed-cell spray foam in a Consort quonset

In September 2026 NFW posted a job from Consort: 3 inches of GENYK closed-cell polyurethane spray foam — a Canadian-made product — sprayed inside a quonset, then finished with a coat of white elastomeric paint over the foam.

A quonset is a steel arch with no framing to hold batts, which is why closed-cell foam is the usual answer for one. Sprayed directly onto the inside of the steel, it adheres to the metal and puts an air and vapour seal where warm, moist inside air would otherwise meet cold steel in winter.
