Alix, AB

Alix has been a village since June 1907, and its houses show it. 59.2% of the 343 occupied dwellings counted in the 2021 census were built before 1980 — about 203 homes, in a village of 774 people.

When roughly three houses in five predate the 1980 code, insulation in Alix is mostly a retrofit question: what is in the attic now, where air is getting through, and what an older building will tolerate.

Local conditions

What the buildings in Alix are actually like.

The housing stock in Alix

76.3% of Alix's dwellings are single-detached. Older and freestanding is the combination where the attic plane and the rim joist do most of the damage — warm air leaves through the ceiling, cold air comes in at the sill — and where one owner can fix the whole envelope without negotiating with a neighbour.

The village is small enough that the census figures carry some noise: the period-of-construction counts come from a 25% sample of a few hundred households, which StatCan rounds to multiples of five. The direction is not in doubt; the decimal is.

What winter does here

Alix has no climate station of its own. Its figures are borrowed from RED DEER REGIONAL A (climate ID 3025480), about 54 km southwest: 5,619 heating degree days at an 18 °C base, a January daily minimum averaging -17.6 °C, and -43.8 °C at the recorded extreme. Most communities around Red Deer use the same station, so this is a regional winter, not an Alix reading.

The Alix Wagon Wheel Museum

NFW insulated the building that houses the Alix Wagon Wheel Museum. The museum association's president described it in a Google review as an older building with its own set of challenges, and a job that had to be finished inside the association's time limits.

The work the review describes is a two-step approach: spray foam to seal the joints and small gaps where air moves, then blown-in insulation added over the foam to reach R50 or better. Steve's reply to the review noted that the approval process was a long one, and that the point of the work was protecting the artifacts in the museum's collection.

“Their attention to detail, ensuring proper sealing of joints and small gaps and adding sufficient "blow-in" insulation over the spray foam to provide R50 or better, speaks to their professionalism.”

Charles Andrews, President, Alix Wagon Wheel Museum Association

Local context

Where Alix sits

Alix was first called Toddsville and was renamed at incorporation for Alexia Westhead — "Alix" was her nickname — one of its early settlers. Irene Parlby, one of the Famous Five, made the village her home and represented the area in the legislature from 1921 to 1935, serving in the provincial cabinet throughout.

The village is 54.8 km from Red Deer by road via Highways 11 and 601, about 48 min on an OSRM routing estimate.
